Sydney Somerndike is a Bruin

UCLA has landed its second transfer commitment of the day, picking up former Arizona pitcher Sydney Somerndike.

The redshirt sophomore from Villa Park, California, joins the Bruins after spending three seasons with the Wildcats. Somerndike carries a career 4.26 ERA with 40 strikeouts across 46 innings pitched. She’s made 24 appearances, holding a 4-2 record and limiting opponents to a .276 batting average.

After missing the 2024 season due to injury, Somerndike saw limited action in 2025, appearing in just two games for a total of 0.2 innings and facing only six batters. Now healthy, she looks to make a fresh start in Los Angeles with a UCLA program that continues to reload through the portal.

I had a chance to hear from Somerndike, and she was kind enough to share her excitement. UCLA has always held personal significance, her mom and all of her mom’s siblings attended the university.

“I’ve always been a fan and aware of how special UCLA is. So for that, I can’t wait to be a part of it!” Somerndike said.

Somerndike is excited and ready to go to work with one of the best staffs in the game, led by Head Coach Kelly Inouye-Perez and legendary assistant Lisa Fernandez. Rob Schweyer, a respected name in pitching development, will help guide Somerndike there in Westwood.

“I’m looking forward to working with legendary coaches and a great team in an environment that will help me grow,” Somerndike added.

My coverage now centers on Vanderbilt Athletics and the sport of softball at the collegiate and pro levels, with a broader take on national sports stories worth telling. I also launched the Fastpitch Wire Softball brand in 2025, covering softball at all levels. As an independent writer, I'm not backed by a major network or corporate media group.
