Gamecocks Cruise Past Providence While Latson Injury Becomes Concern

South Carolina Rolls Past Providence Ahead of SEC Play

Today, the South Carolina Gamecocks rolled to a 96-55 win over the Providence Friars, improving to 13-1 on the season. South Carolina was led by Madina Okot and Tessa Johnson with 18 points each, with Joyce Edwards contributing 14. Okot also snatched 13 rebounds to record her 10th double-double of the season.

The story of the game came in the second quarter when Ta’Niya Latson went down with a lower left leg injury. She was helped off the court without putting any weight on that leg.

Latson is averaging 16.9 points per game this season, second on the team behind Joyce Edwards’ 21.4. The timetable for her return to the court is yet to be determined.

After the game, Head Coach Dawn Staley had no update on Latson. She did mention that Latson was smiling, had treatment all second half, and will be looked at further sometime tomorrow.

South Carolina will go into the new year and immediately begin SEC play on January 1, as Alabama will visit the Gamecocks at 2:00 p.m. ET at Colonial Life Arena. The Crimson Tide are 14-0, and last saw action on December 21 as they defeated the Troy Trojans 77-59.

As for the Gamecocks, they are currently fourth in the country in scoring with 92.9 points per game. They are allowing 53.1 points per game, which currently places them 13th in the country for points allowed according to Warren Nolan.
