Kevin Sumlin Named Head Coach of the Houston Gamblers

Kevin Sumlin is Back in Houston
For the second straight day, the UFL has introduced a former collegiate head coach to lead one of its franchises. This morning, the Houston Gamblers and the league announced Kevin Sumlin as the team’s new head coach.
“Kevin Sumlin brings an excellent record of success at the head coaching level, especially in the state of Texas, where he has made his mark as a winner,” said UFL President and CEO Russ Brandon. “It is only appropriate that someone with deep roots in Texas football history takes over Houston as it embarks on a new era as the Gamblers.”
Sumlin arrives with a career head coaching record of 98-70, spending all but one season at the collegiate level. His longest tenure came at Texas A&M from 2012 through 2017, and he has also served as head coach at Houston (2008-11) and Arizona (2018-20). While at Texas A&M, he compiled a 51-26 record in College Station.
He most recently served as the associate head coach, co-offensive coordinator, and tight ends coach at the University of Maryland for two seasons in 2023 and 2024.
“Texas is my football home, so I look forward to returning to the state as Houston’s new head coach,” said Sumlin. “I will build a winning team and deliver an exciting brand of football, which the Gamblers name instantly evokes.”
With Sumlin’s deep ties to Texas and the Houston area, it will be worth watching to see how that connection translates to the team’s identity and the buy in throughout the Gamblers fanbase. This spring should also be a fun one for the UFL and it’s fans.
